Film Group Meeting
October 12, 2016 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
12th October, 2016 – “Hobson’s Choice”: this wonderful tale is of an oafish father (Charles Laughton) whose boot-making business is run by his eldest daughter (Brenda de Banzie) and depends on the skill of his shy boot maker (John Mills). Hobson’s life is thrown into chaos when his daughter decides she has other plans. Made in 1954 by director David Lean and based on Harold Brigstock’s play, the film, remains a delight and a masterpiece. It won the British Academy Award for that year and the outside scenes were shot mainly in Salford. They are a reminder of how stark the industrial landscape of the North West was. (Oh and look out for a very young Prunella Scales.)
