Founding of the Athenaeum’s Library

September 29, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

£25.00

Dr Mark Towsey from the University of Liverpool will describe the social, political and economic background of the 18th Century that inspired our Institution’s founders to create a new library in Liverpool.

We will hear about the subscription libraries that came to Britain from the east coast of the USA, as well as the desire to educate and disseminate. Drawing on our own library collection, Dr Towsey’s talk will help us to understand what made it so important for initial Proprietors of the Athenaeum to create a legacy that has lasted over 200 years.
