Z Cars 1839 – Fact and Fictionalisation in the early years of the Liverpool Constabulary Force

“In the late 1830s policing in Liverpool was transformed to an extent not experienced again until the Z cars era in the 1960s.In the talk we look at the pioneering of concepts such as statistics,cost-benefit analysis and linking crime with social deprivation.Sources drawn upon include newspapers,memoirs of an early police constable and the first novel about Liverpool life.From this mix emerges  the extraordinary tale of a fallible human who tried to make a career in the new police.”
