11th December, 2018: Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933) A musical which could only be on film, it was directed by Mervyn LeRoy and choreographed by Busby Berkley. The gold diggers in question are four aspiring actresses: Polly (Ruby Keeler), Carol, an ingenue (Joan Blondel), Trixie, a torch singer (Aline MacMahon) and a glamour puss, (Ginger Rogers). Made during the Great Depression, the film is about a production which is ready to be shown, but is closed for non-ppayment of bills. The producer Barney Hopkins (Ned Sparks) despairs, because he has everything except the money to put on the show, but Plly’s boyfriend, Brad, (Dick Powell) comes to his rescue.

The film was selected in 2003 by the Library of Congress for preservation in the US National Film Registry as being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant”.
