HMS Defiant – (UK 1962). 1797; the country is at war with Revolutionary France, and they depend upon the Royal Navy. A captain (Alec Guinness) takes possession of his new ship Defiant, at a time when there are mutinies as Spithead and the Nore. He also has to deal with a cruel and despotic First Lieutenant (Dirk Bogarde) and a potential mutiny led by the Bosun (Anthony Quayle). This is one of the best portrayals in film of life in the Royal Navy at this era. Directed by Lewis Gilbert, this is a really good yarn. (101 minutes)
