The 60,000 volumes that make up the Athenaeum Library have, until recently, been unavailable to any except the membership of the institution.
This position has now been reversed in order to make the wealth of the collections accessible to members of the Friends of the Athenaeum Library. Membership of the Friends is free and open to any person who can be recommended by an appropriate third party. Applicants must be able to show that they have a genuine purpose and are engaged in active research. Present members include academics and interested amateurs.
Friends of the Library are welcome to use the collection on the afternoons of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday on payment of a small daily fee. For more prolonged research projects, a pro rata arrangement will be made. It is necessary to pre-book appointments:

Quarterly Friends of the Library events are organised when speakers give talks and demonstrations on topics related to the Library and its collection. One event in January of each year is organised in co-operation with the ’Eighteenth Century World’s Study Group’ based at the University of Liverpool.
Application for membership is made to the Athenaeum. An application form will be sent and must be supported by a Proprietor of the Athenaeum, a person who is not a Proprietor but of professional standing in the community. On receipt of the form the applicant will be sent details of the practice and management of the facility.
