The Athenaeum Writer In Residence Award 2013-2014

The Athenaeum Writer In Residence Award is now in its twelve year.

In Partnership with the Liverpool City Council, the Liverpool Daily Post & Radio Merseyside, the Athenaeum created this annual writing award for young people.

The Award
The Award Includes;
* Designation as Writer – In – Residence for one year
* Prize of £1,000
* Publication of the winning entry in the Liverpool Daily Post
* The Opportunity to produce and publish two articles, essays or poems.
* Honorary Membership of the Athenaeum for one year.
* A short period of secondment with the writing team at the Liverpool Daily Post.
* An Invitation from the Athenaeum to a Lunch or Dinner on an appropriate occasion.

In addition, if the entry comes via a school, The Athenaeum will donate £100 to be used for the Purchase of books for the School Library. Towards the end of his or her year, we will expect from the winner an appropriate report on the year’s activities and rewards.

Eligibility

The award is open to all young people who will be between the ages of 16 and 19 on the 16th November 2013, the final date for the receipt of entries.

How to enter

Writers are invited to submit an example of some 1,000 – 1,200 words of original prose which can be in the form of a short story, a travel essay or something about which they feel passionate. It may be serious or amusing. What the judges are looking for is an example of their work which they are proud to have written.

The Closing date for entries is Saturday 16TH November 2013.

The Selection Process

The judges will select finalists who will be invited to a reception at the Athenaeum in December (date to be confirmed).

The finalists will be invited to write a further piece of some 1,000-1,200 words on a subject which will be announced. Entries will then be required to be submitted by the 17th January 2014.

The Winner of the Writer-In-Residence Award will be announced at a reception (6:30pm-7:00pm) on 12th February, 2014, and the winning entry and other finalists’ entries will be published in the Liverpool Daily Post.
