SUMMARY:Literature Group: Gone With the Wind
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 7th February 2023 – Library Reading Room \nDiana Lane will be discussing Gone with the Wind\, a novel by Margaret Mitchell\, was published in 1936 and subsequently made into a film in 1939. The book has been an American bestseller ever since and in 2014 a Harris poll found it to be the second favourite book of American readers\, just behind the Bible. It has been absorbed into American popular culture\, referred to and interpreted by scholars at American universities. The film has been considered to be one of the greatest movies ever made. \nSet in Georgia during and after the Civil War\, this work of historical fiction tells the story of Scarlett O’Hara\, the daughter of a well-to-do plantation owner\, who uses every means at her disposal to claw her way out of poverty following Sherman’s destructive “March to the Sea”. Its themes resonate in American politics to this day. \nAttendance is free of charge.

SUMMARY:Liverpool Salon Presents - Dreams of Order
DESCRIPTION:Dreams of Order \nThe Athenaeum club\, Reading Room\, Thursday 26th January 2023\, 6.30-8.00 pm \nJoin the Liverpool Salon for the second in a series of conversations that take utopia and dystopia as themes for exploring the possibilities of building other\, and better\, societies\, while reflecting on the shortcomings of our own. \nWriting in 1939\, E.H. Carr laid the blame for the “abrupt descent from the visionary hopes of the first post-war decade to the grim despair of the second” on the utopian illusions that a liberal world order of prosperity and progress would usher in a new era of international cooperation and world peace. \nHas history repeated itself in the post-Cold War period\, which pronounced the ‘end of history’ and the dawn of a new post-political world in 1989? Blindly believing that an infinitely expanding market could be the foundation of an interconnected world order\, have liberal utopians once more been sleepwalking into a dystopian future? \nConfirmed speakers: \nPhilip Cunliffe\, senior lecturer in international conflict\, author\, The New Twenty Years’ Crisis 1999-2019: A critique of international relations; co-host\, @Bungacast podcast \nCheryl Hudson\, lecturer in US political history\, University of Liverpool. Former director of the academic programme at the Rothermere American Institute\, University of Oxford.

SUMMARY:The Library & Archives Group
DESCRIPTION:Proprietor\, David Roscoe\, will be using some of the Athenaeum’s own archives to speak about a fascinating period in the Athenaeum’s own history: \n‘The Relocation Committee’ and the Athenaeum’s move from its original premises in Church Street to its present building in Church Alley. \nThe move became necessary due to the City Council’s road-widening scheme for Church Street. This resulted in plans to demolish the original building. \nBy the time of the end of the First World War the Athenaeum faced serious challenges with membership numbers down and annual financial deficits. Compulsory purchase of the Club’s building amounted to a real threat to the Athenaeum’s very existence. \nThe talk will examine the story of the negotiations with the City Council and how the Club survived. Who came out well from the eventual deal? The new building was able to open in 1928. David has used 30 years of the Athenaeum’s minute books\, as well as the minutes of the ‘Relocation Committee’. \nThursday 1st December at 5.30 pm in the Library Reading Room\, with supper afterwards at 6.30pm for those members who book for this. \n  \nMENU \nMain Course \nConfit Duck a’la Orange\nFrench beans\nHasselback Potatoes \nRisotto Forestier (V)\nWild Mushrooms\, hazelnuts\nParsnip Crisps \n-ooOoo- \nDessert \nChristmas Pudding Cheesecake\nBrandy custard\n-oo0oo-\nTea or Coffee \n

SUMMARY:Liverpool Salon Presents - Beyond the Hype
DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Hype: The Inside Story of Science’s Biggest Media Controversies \nFiona Fox’s book Beyond the Hype takes us behind the scenes of some of the most toxic science stories of the last two decades\, including: Climategate\, involving the theft of ten years of emails from a Climate researcher\, used to claim that climate change was a hoax\, the shaming of the Nobel prize winner Tim Hunt\, the media frenzy over the dangers of ‘Frankenstein food’\, and the bewildering story of the harassment of scientists researching Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ ME. \nThe book finishes with Fox’s reflections on the pandemic\, from the media profiles of Chris Whitty and Patrick Vallance\, to the role of political journalists and the government’s mantra of ‘following the science’. \nChief Executive of the Science Media Centre since 2001\, Fiona Fox believes in the vital importance of good science communication and warns of the damage to public understanding when scientists are scared to speak out on the defining issues of our times. \nBeyond the Hype is chaired by Pauline Hadaway\, co-founder of the Liverpool Salon and is part of the Salon’s series of public conversations on themes of utopia and dystopia. \n  \nTickets: £10 (early bird £7.50 until 15 October)
