DESCRIPTION:Poetry of the Great War. To celebrate the centenary of the Armistice\, proprietors are asked to bring along a favourite poem from the First World War. It could be by a well-known writer such as Owen\, Sassoon\, Brooke or Rosenberg or something more obscure. It doesn’t matter if several people bring the same poem or if you don’t want to bring one at all. We will read the poems and have a short discussion of each\, led by the person who has brought it. DESCRIPTION:LIVERPOOL BEYOND THE BRINK: \nTHE REMAKING OF A POST IMPERIAL CITY \nProfessor Michael Parkinson will be discussing the book he is currently writing to update his 1980s classic – ‘Liverpool on the Brink’. His new book describes the extraordinary if incomplete renaissance of Liverpool during the last 30 years. It shows how much has been achieved\, who helped and what are its outstanding challenges in future. \nThis book looks at how economic decline caused the physical\, social and political fragmentation of that huge imperial city during the 1970s – and at the efforts since then to revive and reconnect the parts of a disintegrating city. It charts the city’s fall in the 1980s\, its gradual normalisation in the 90s\, its attempt to become a premier  European city in the first part of this century and its efforts to be ambitious in an age of austerity. \nIt asks:  How far has Liverpool come and where does it now stand now in comparison with 30 years ago – and also in comparison to other big cities in the UK? What were the most important forces driving change? Who helped most and least – local politicians\, business\, community leaders\, national politicians\, government\, Europe? Who gained most and least – which people and which places? Finally it asks – what’s next for Liverpool? \nIt identifies the key economic\, social and political challenges facing the city – increasing productivity\, spreading the befits of renaissance to all people in the city and making sure the city’s development is both high quality and authentic. It spells out who needs to do what better to address them – government\, the leaders and people of Liverpool. \n  \nPROFESSOR MICHAEL PARKINSON CBE \nMichael is Associate Pro Vice Chancellor for civic engagement at the University of Liverpool. Michael has acted as adviser on urban affairs to the European Commission\, the European Parliament\, OECD\, EUROCITIES\, the Department of Communities and Local Government\, the National Audit Office\, the House of Commons Select Committees\, the Core Cities and a range of cities in the UK and Europe.  He served as a Board member of the Prime Minister’s Regeneration Investment Organisation and a Trustee of the Centre for Cities. He is currently a trustee of Alternative Futures Group and of Procure Plus Group. He was a member of the Liverpool Commonwealth Games 2022 Bid Project Board and is a member of the Mayor’s Advisory Board on Liverpool’s World Heritage Status.  Michael led CLG’s expert panel on Regeneration and Economic Development Analysis until 2010.  He was Director of the ESRC’s Programme on CITIES: Cohesion and Competitiveness\, a major five-year research programme involving 25 Universities.  He has generated over £8m in research funds to assess the development of cities\, urban policy and regeneration in the UK and Europe. He lectures extensively nationally and internationally and is a regular contributor to the media. He was made Commander of the British Empire for services to urban regeneration in 2007. He was made Citizen of Honour of Liverpool in 2016. \n  \nMichael wrote ‘Liverpool on the Brink’ in 1985. His career has been partly devoted to showing how much the city has changed for the better since then! He recently produced ‘Albert Dock: What Part in Liverpool’s Continuing Renaissance?’ (2017)\, ‘Liverpool’s Elected Mayor: An Independent Assessment’ (2016) and ‘The State of Liverpool City Region: Making the Most of Devolution.’ (2016). DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, 27 September\, 6:30 for 7:00pm  £25.00 per person.                    \nThe first quarter of this year’s Presidential programme ends on    Thursday 27 September\,  as we celebrate 30 years of Tate Liverpool with an illustrated talk by Andrea Nixon\, former Chief Executive of the Gallery. \nHoused in a converted  warehouse within the historic Albert Dock\, the Tate Liverpool was opened in 1988 by HRH Prince Charles\, an event covered by BBC Two television\, and displays work from the Tate Collection which comprises the national collection of British Art from the year 1500 to the present day as well as international modern art. Until 2003\, Tate Liverpool was the largest gallery of modern and contemporary art in the UK outside London. \nAndrea Nixon is a highly experienced executive director and cultural consultant with a significant track record in change management\, strategic development\, partnership programming\, business development and fundraising. Appointed Executive Director of Tate Liverpool in 2006\, Andrea led the management and continued development of the gallery from Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2008\, up until May 2018. She has national board experience at Arts Council North\, the Crafts Council and The Audience Agency\, as well as serving on the Visitor Economy Board for the Liverpool City Region LEP from 2011 to 2018.  Prior to moving to Liverpool\, Andrea was Director of Development for the Tate in London from 1998 to 2006\, playing a key role in the creation of both Tate Modern and Tate Britain. She is currently Chair of the V&A Dundee Advisory Council\, a Director of the Liverpool Waterfront Business Partnership and a member of the Humanities Research Board for Durham University.  As an independent consultant she is working with a range of clients on strategic cultural planning\, including Liverpool City Council\, the Old Vic Theatre in London\, Merseyside Dance Initiative\, Marketing Cheshire and the Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool. \nAndrea graduated with a first-class Honours Degree in English Language and Literature from Durham University and has a post-graduate diploma in Arts Management from City University London.  She is married with a daughter and lives in Liverpool. \n  \nStarter \nItalian roast tomato & pepper soup with cannellini beans & Parmesan\, focaccia bread \n  \nMain \nRoast breast of chicken with a pork and sage farcie\, mushroom & pancetta cream sauce \nserved with a selection of seasonal vegetables\, roast chateau potatoes with garlic & thyme \n  \nDessert \nMillionaire caramel mousse\, honeycomb & butterscotch \n  \ntea\, coffee & mints \n

His works are colourful\, dramatic\, rhythmic and possess intense detail. He explores and develops techniques\, inventing many new and  imaginative ways of integrating textiles with other media. His recent work\, inspired by traditions of floral imagery has incorporated computerized machine embroidery\, acrylic paint\, wood\, glass and  collage. \n

This stunning line up will be performing a range of classics in the unique surroundings of our Newsroom\, at an event which includes a two course meal at the interval. Other events have included performing for the final visit of HMS Liverpool\, the final visit for HMS Illustrious\, the historic 3 Queens event which saw the three Cunard ships on the river Mersey at one time\, the Cunard building centenary concert\, and supporting Russell Watson at the International Mersey river festival. \nIn 2013 Danielle was honoured to perform with the band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines at the Philharmonic hall Liverpool\, for the commemoration concert for the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic. This also included a service held in Liverpool cathedral which was broadcast live on BBC one with HRH the Princess Royal in attendance. \n2016 was a significant year for Liverpool as the city held a vigil for the 96 Hillsborough victims after the families of the 96 finally got the justice they deserved. The city came together outside St Georges hall and it was a moment that will go down in history as the whole of Liverpool sang ‘You’ll never walk alone’ The vigil was broadcast live all over the world including Sky news\, ITV\, and BBC one.  Danielle sang a stirring rendition of ‘Abide with me. \nDanielle is in great demand as a soloist locally and Internationally for concerts and corporate events.  Performances over the years have seen her travel to New York\, Japan\, Italy\, France\, Barbados\, and also the Middle East.  Most recently\, Danielle was privileged to be the guest soloist for the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Portsmouth in their concerts at Cadogan Hall\, Philharmonic Hall\, and Bridgewater Hall. \nJason Ellis \nJason was born in Yorkshire and is a graduate of Leeds college of Music\, and Liverpool University where he trained in classical and romantic piano performance\, composition\, orchestration\, and arranging. \nJason has been involved with choral music since accompanying the Liverpool University singers during his studies\, and in 2013 Jason founded the Mersey wave choir. He works with several choral groups across Merseyside including the Magull based Georgian singers\, and Wirral based Cappriccio singers.  Since 2010 he has been accompanist to the Froneysyllte Male voice choir.   Since 2014 Jason can be regularly found at the piano in the Liverpool Empire theatre and was recently accompanist for the Rainhill Music festival. \nJason performs regularly on the concert platform as a soloist and accompanist\, composes and creates musical arrangements and transcriptions on a freelance basis.   Jason is a session musician at Industrial Music studios and has an active piano/theory music tutor practice.   He is also a member of the Music and staging committee for the Llangollen International Eisteddfod. \n  \nNick Hardy \nNick Hardy (tenor)  made his Royal Opera House Covent Garden debut\, in September 2017 as a member of the borghesi in Richard Jones new setting of La Boheme with Sir Antonio Pappano conducting\, a production which was screened live in cinemas throughout Europe and shown later worldwide.  As a freelance singer he has appeared with the choruses of English National Opera\, Welsh National Opera\, Opera North\, and Wexford Festival Opera.   For Scottish Opera and Buxton Festival Opera he has performed chorus roles and covered major roles.  For London Festival Opera he has appeared as a principal in opera galas in Italy\, Germany\, and Spain. \nHis roles in oratorio have taken him throughout the UK and to France.  With small local companies he has performed more than twenty major opera roles including\, Rodolfo\, Canio\, Turridu\, Don Jose\, Nadir\, Manrico\, Cavaradossi\, Renato\, Duke of Mantua\, and Radames.    His principal teachers after studying at the Royal Academy of Music were Joan Carlyle and Colin Iveson.   He lives in Liverpool and is the founder and director of Liverpool Italian opera Co. \n  \nDavid Ellis \nDavid Ellis (Baritone) studied singing at the Royal Northern College of Music.  During his last term at college\, David was a regular guest at Iceland Opera where he sang the role of Silvio-I Pagliacci.  On leaving the RNCM David was invited to join Glyndebourne chorus and to cover the role of Guglielmo- Cosi Fan Tutte.  Following Glyndebourne David was invited to sing the role of Sid-Albert Herring for English Touring Opera followed by Don Giovanni –Mozarts  Don Giovanni. \nFollowing his time at Glyndebourne David joined Scottish opera to cover the role of Marcello-La Boheme and was fortunate to actually perform the role on one occasion\, he also covered Sharpless-Madam Butterfly.  During his time with Scottish opera\, David sang regularly as part of their Concert tour along the west coast of Scotland. Whilst performing Don Giovanni David was invited to join Royal Opera House Covent Garden where he sang such roles as Morales-Carmen\, Nachtigall-Die Meistersinger\, Marullo-Rigoletto\,Sylvano-un ballo in maschera\, and Sonora- La Fanciulla Del West.  David sang the role of Ned Keene-Peter Grimes for the Royal Opera in Sicily. \nWhilst on contract at the ROH  David was invited back to Scottish Opera to sing the role of Talbot-Maria Stuarda. \nFollowing his time at the Royal Opera\, David decided to take a career break and peruse other business interests\, later returning  to Opera North to sing the role of Lord Mountjoy-Gloriana.  This was then made into an international Emmy award winning film adaptation. \nDavid is currently appearing in concerts and running his own corporate entertainment business in the North West. \nMenu  \n  \nMain Course \nPaupiette of Plaice\, salmon and tarragon mousseline\, prawn and chive sauce \nPanache of vegetables\, cheese and onion potato croquette. \n  \nDessert \nSalted Caramel Opera\, Seville Orange sauce \n  \ntea\, coffee & mints \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Summer Concert Gershwin Evening
DESCRIPTION:Words and Music That Transcend Time \n George and Ira Gershwin will always be remembered as the songwriting team whose voice was synonymous with the sounds and style of the Jazz Age. But from 1924 until George’s death in 1937\, the brothers wrote almost exclusively with each other\, composing over two dozen scores for Broadway and Hollywood. Together\, George and Ira Gershwin wrote the music for many shows and films. Some of their more famous works include “The Man I Love”\, “Fascinating Rhythm”\, “Someone to Watch Over Me”\, “I Got Rhythm”\, and “They Can’t Take That Away from Me”. In 1931\, the brothers collaborated on the score for the Broadway show\, “Of Thee I Sing\,” which became the first musical to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Their now-classic folk opera\, PORGY AND BESS (co-written with DuBose Heyward)\, is constantly revived in opera houses and theatres throughout the world. \nTo bring some special pieces of the Gershwin brothers music alive for this event we have local singer of the year Sarah Chidlow. Sarah began singing at the age of 11 years old in a small local theatre group\, currently is a member of the Birkenhead Operatic Society Trust (BOST) and has performed in many of their musical productions.  Most recently Sarah performed the role of Hope Hardcourt in ‘Anything goes’ which was performed at the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton last year. In June this year she played Eliza Doolittle in the BOST production of a concert version of ‘My Fair Lady’ which was performed in the concert suite of St. George’s Hall. This is one of many venues that Sarah has performed in and around the Liverpool area. DESCRIPTION:Following on from the success of June 14th’s Special Folk concert\, the Music Group is proud to announce the concert in the series. Join us on Thursday 5 July for a performance by the Capriol Singers.\nCapriol is a mixed voice (soprano\, alto\, tenor and bass) choir which was formed in 1960. They perform three seasonal concerts with a varied programme throughout the year. The repertoire ranges from 16th century composers to present day composers\, both classical and popular. In addition\, they are asked to sing at local events\, weddings and other celebrations. Venues have included the Sefton Park Palm House\, St. Nicholas Pier Head\, Metropolitan Cathedral and BBC Songs of Praise.\nThe concert is free of charge\, however booking is required and can be done so via the Members’ Area or through reception.\nThe bar will be open throughout the concert\, and attendees can order food from the Newsroom Menu before and after the performance! \nWhy not bring a guest\, or guests!!! \nSchedule: Concert will commence at 5:30pm.\nInterval from 6:00pm to 6:15pm\n2nd performance from 6:15pm to 7:00pm\nThe Newsroom food service will be extended until 8:00pm!

I am interested in painting’s ability to relate experience by drawing parallels between the action of weather upon the land and the action of colour and mark upon the canvas.
