SUMMARY:Arts Group
DESCRIPTION:John McClenaghen.  Painter. Tuesday 26th June 2018 at 2:00pm \n‘My work explores the phenomena of time and change within the landscape. I am interested in painting’s ability to relate experience by drawing parallels between the action of weather upon the land and the action of colour and mark upon the canvas. The main focus of my practice is in painting and drawing\, something that began when I was a student at the Glasgow School of Art.           \n  \nI tend to return to the same places again and again as I try to establish a relationship with the space through drawing and painting it over time.’ \n  \nJohn McClenaghen studied at the Glasgow School of Art he is currently Programme Leader for the BA Fine Art\, Photography and Film in the School of Creative Arts\, Glyndŵr University.

SUMMARY:The Film Group
DESCRIPTION:Guests will be treated to two films in Junes “Classic Film Group” \nSAFETY LAST (USA 1922) \nDir. by Fred Newmayer. \nStarring Harold Lloyd\, Mildred Davies. \nThis is a silent film\, with titles and a good music track\, but it is EVEN NOW one of the funniest films you can see.  Harold is  a young man from the country\, who goes to the Big City to make his fame and fortune\, and ends having to climb up a skyscraper. \n  \nAlso THE PLANK.  1967\, UK. \nA slapstick comedy following the misadventures of two builders who require a floorboard. Written and directed by Eric Sykes\, it includes most of Britain’s top comedians at that time\, including Tommy Cooper\, Jimmy Edwards\, Roy Castle\, Jimmy Tarbuck and\, of course\, Eric Sykes. \nAlthough not strictly a silent film\, it is unusual in having little dialogue. Instead\, the film is punctuated by grunts\, other vocal noises and sound effects. \nApropos of nothing\, the plank itself was sold at auction in December\, 2011 for £1050.

SUMMARY:Dinner with His Honour Simon Tonking
DESCRIPTION:We are fortunate that His Honour Simon Tonking will be joining us on Friday\, 18th May\, to speak to us after dinner. Again the time is 6.30 for 7.00 and the dress code is lounge suit. Simon is a recently-retired Circuit Judge\, and will dispel many of the mysteries surrounding the sentencing process in criminal cases in England and Wales. He is eminently qualified to do so. A former Resident Judge and Recorder of Stafford\, he also spent many years with the Judicial College teaching newly-appointed judges how to do the job\, and he is one of the authors of the manual used by all Crown Court judges when conducting trials and passing sentence. \nI can promise you that his talk will be witty and informative\, and that it will not be legalistic. I heard him deliver it to an appreciative invited audience at a packed Lichfield Cathedral. He will tell you amongst other things about the different purposes of sentencing\, which do not always sit easily together; the various forms of sentence which can be passed; the factors taken into account when deciding what sentence is appropriate; the extent to which judges and magistrates receive guidance on what sentence to pass; the practical effect of life sentences; the factors governing the release of prisoners (particularly topical in the light of the Warboys case); and the effectiveness of imprisonment in relation to rehabilitation and re-offending.\nSo come along for an enjoyable evening and enhance your knowledge at the same time. Mind you\, given the subject-matter\, you’d better behave yourselves!

SUMMARY:Architecture Group
DESCRIPTION:The Albert Dock\, \nArchitectural Gem and Jewel in the Crown \n  \nTime: 4 PM Thursday\, 17 May 2018 \nVenue: Athenaeum Library\, followed by discussions in the Newsroom. \nPresented by: David Roscoe\, Athenaeum Vice President \nThose that attended the last architectural group meeting on “Lighthouses” which ended with the festive gathering in the Newsroom will be well aware of the fine fare on offer from our new menu and the conviviality it generated. The Doppler ganging of our architectural presentation with the Third Thursday Networking event is proving to be a winning combination. \nOur next meeting promises to reach greater heights as Athenaeum vice president David Roscoe presents the background story and lesser-known history of Jesse Hartley’s architectural masterpiece. The Albert Dock was the world-class event of its day that changed the fortunes of the city and impacted world trade. Often referred to as the Jewel in the Crown of our visitor economy\, it is the centre-piece of our UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest group of Grade 1 listed buildings in the country. This not to be missed event will be well attended so get to the library early and pencil in your diary for the follow-on carousing that extends discussions into the elegant Newsroom with the enhanced hospitality now on offer. \nDavid Roscoe is Chairman of Gower Street Estates\, the management company of the Albert Dock \nProprietors may recall that they were promised a “virtual pub crawl” from Ken Pye at the last architectural meeting. Unfortunately\, for personal reasons Ken had to postpone his architectural carousing and we were illuminated by Jim Bellew’s presentation on lighthouses. The good news is\, that those with a thirst for knowledge on Liverpool’s watering holes can fill their cups of curiosity at the history group meeting at 2 o’clock on 16 May when Bob Thurlow will speak on “Inn Liverpool” a history of some of Liverpool’s pubs. Cheers! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Dinner in Memory of Frank Moran\, John Cook & Ian Fisher
DESCRIPTION:We have recently and most regrettably lost three Past Presidents of the Athenaeum\, namely Frank Moran\, John Cook and Ian Fisher. On Friday 11th May at 6.30 for 7.00 pm there will be a dinner in their memory. The dress code will be lounge suits. \nThursday 10th May would have been Frank’s 90th birthday\, and though it has not been possible to organise the dinner on that date\, we are only one day out. His family tell me that that they much approve\, and that Frank would much have approved of the Athenaeum’s holding such a dinner. Russell has kindly devised a menu that would have been to Frank’s liking\, namely crayfish salad with quails’ eggs and brandy and peppercorn Marie Rose; breast of guinea fowl with peas and bacon served with seasonable vegetables and potatoes; and tarte au citron with raspberries. A string quartet composed of members of the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra will entertain us\, which is appropriate as John was a cellist with this orchestra and Ian was known to love chamber music. \nFrank’s family live in the south of England and will not be able to attend\, but Judith Fisher will be there\, and I hope that Suzanne Cook will be present as well. Please join us if you can for what\, although tinged with sadness\, is intended to be a warm and celebratory occasion. \nMENU \nStarter \nCrayfish salad with Quails eggs\nBrandy and peppercorn Marie Rose \nMain Course \nBreast of Guinea Fowl with Peas and Bacon\nServed with Seasonal vegetables and potatoes \nDessert\nTart au Citron \, raspberries \nTea\, Coffee & Mints

SUMMARY:The Film Group
DESCRIPTION:“On the Town” (1949) \nOn the Town – three sailors have 24 hours’ shore leave in New York. Gabey (Gene Kelly) falls in love with “Miss Turnstiles”\, a woman on an advert and the three man race around New York trying to find her. Starring Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra\, the film was directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen and also choreographed by Gene Kelly.  The music is by Leonard Bernstein and Roger Edens. It was adapted from a Broadway stage musical of the same name\, but most of Bernstein’s music was dropped from the film\, because Edens disliked the majority of Bernstein’s score\, considering it too complex and operatic. As a result Bernstein boycotted the film. \n  \nThe film was made in 1949 and was filmed in technicolor. It is also notable for having a combination of studio and location filming\, which is brave when shooting a musical. The weather can affect the shooting schedule and the sound!. The film is full of well known songs\, such as New York\, New York and won the Oscar for Best Music-Scoring of a Musical Picture.  \n  \nEnjoy this lovely piece of nostalgia.
