SUMMARY:Library Talk & High Tea
DESCRIPTION:Library Talk & High Tea. £15.00 per person\n(price includes a £3.00 donation to the Library)\nThe treasures of the Athenaeum Library\, contained within the Committee Room / Strong Room\, have been frequently used for tours and publicity purposes. However\, the library’s main collection\, features significant resources covering a wide selection of topics. Presented by Dr Andrew Caine\, this talk illustrates the Athenaeum’s holdings on one of the key events of the twentieth century\, the Russian Revolution of 1917. The centenary of this epochal moment in world history\, which saw the overthrown of Tsar Nicholas II and the Romanov dynasty\, and the eventual rise to power in October 1917 of the revolutionary Bolshevik party\, headed by Vladimir Ilych Lenin\, provides an opportunity for the library staff at the Athenaeum\, to demonstrate the institution’s holdings on the subject. \nStarter \nQuiche \nSalads \nMain \nGrilled chicken\, with new potatoes \nDessert \nSticky Toffee\nTea & Coffee \n

SUMMARY:Architecture Group Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Architecture Group meeting: Wednesday 24 May\, 5:30pm in the Library. \nThe revamp of the Athenaeum Architectural Group comes at a most interesting moment. After decades of decline and neglect\, followed by our culture-led renaissance\, the city region is now seeing major investment and fundamental change in its built-environment. From the new container port to the Mersey Gateway Bridge\, to the redefinition of our raison d’etre and growth in the visitor economy\, change is in the air. “Architecture” in our city is no longer just looking back to past glories! There are exciting times ahead! \nThe Athenaeum was founded 220 years ago as a sanctuary for men of affairs to consider contemporary challenges in changing times – “plus ça change\, plus c’est la même chose” – albeit for our gender plurality! \n  \nSo\, don’t miss the opening event at which we intend to determine future activities followed by dinner with a keynote address by Suzy Jones Director of the Royal Institute of British Architecture (RIBA) North West. \n  \nIf you’re not there\, you might get talked about! \n

SUMMARY:Film Group Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 12th April\, 2017 – “Good Night and Good Luck”: Made in 2005\, this is about Edward J Murrow’s confrontation with Joe McCarthy and the part CBS News played in his downfall. Murrow (a hero in Britain because of his broadcasts during the London blitz) is played by David Stathairn and together with his producer\, Fred Friendly\, (George Clooney) they set out to show the American people the unacceptability of McCarthyism. Written and directed by George Clooney (whose own father was an early TV newsman)\, the film shows the pressure that Murrow and his team were under from McCarthy’s lies and bullying. Destroying others by lies\, McCarthy is destroyed by the truth. The cast includes Robert Downey Jr\, Frank Langella and Geoff Daniels. An excellent portrayal of a very uncomfortable period in America’s recent history\, it won Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars.

SUMMARY:Potions and Pills: A Brief History of Poisoning
DESCRIPTION:There has always been a fascination with poisons; a toadstool that can kill\, or Shakespearian potions for murder and suicide. Prof Francesco Falciani from the University of Liverpool will take us on a journey from man’s earliest “experiments” with poisons (usually on their enemies or less favoured relatives!)\, through how industrial and social revolutions required a scientific approach to ensure better human health\, to the possibilities of a future of safe\, tailor-made drugs and products. The Universities in Liverpool are at the forefront of radical new research that is improving safety and removing the need for animal experimentation in these areas. Our speaker\, Prof Falciani\, is in high demand across the world for his expertise applying modern molecular biological approaches to the ancient study of toxicology. This talk will start in the past\, but certainly end up with a glimpse of the future.\nPlease note: We intend to start the talk at 6.30pm and have the supper after the talk. This is in response to Proprietors wanting earlier events and\, of course\, those needing to get back to Wirral by train…
