DESCRIPTION:‘Mostly Madrigals’ are a choral group based in South Liverpool\, and sing\, er\, …. They also sing  a variety of traditional and folk songs. They are coming to the Athenaeum to entertain us after supper on 21st July. We are lucky to have them. Formed some 25 years ago\, they have performed at such venues as St. George’s Hall in support of the Roy Castle Charity\, the Palm House in Sefton Park\, Speke Hall and St. Faith’s Church in Crosby. They are multiple winners of the Stanley Kennet Shield at the annual Liverpool Music Festival. Their members include Maggie Willett\, Mark Bishop\, Andy Collier\, Sue Grainger\, Diana Crew and Sandy Harley\, some or all of whom will be known to many of you. \nThe evening will begin with welcome drinks (Prosecco\, or Pimms if you prefer)\, followed by a delicious two-course supper with a summery menu\, namely roast loin of cod with all the trimmings\, and lemon posset with shortbread. \nAll this for a mere £14.00. Yes\, really. \nFor those coming straight from work\, please note that the Newsroom bar is open all day on Fridays and that sandwiches and light snacks can be ordered if anyone wishes to bridge the gap before supper. \nDon’t miss what promises to be a happy and enjoyable evening. DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk – Hugh Miller \nTuesday 25th April 2017\n1.00 – 4.00pm (arrivals from 1.00pm for 1.30pm start).\nLocation : The Athenaeum\, Liverpool (Church Alley). \nTickets : £12.50 each (includes tea\, sandwiches & cakes at The Athenaeum\, Liverpool). \nAs part of Bluecoat Display Centre’s ongoing programme of exciting artist’s talks\, the next event will feature furniture maker Hugh Miller. Hugh will speak about his artistic career. \nHugh divides his time between producing his own wooden furniture designs for sale and exhibition and creating bespoke commissions for clients. His original training as an architect is intrinsic to both areas of his work. He combines his understanding of architecture with his love of wood in the design and manufacture of fine furniture. Each piece is designed and handmade in his studio\, using beautiful hardwood timbers. \nA traditional afternoon tea in the grand setting of The Athenaeum will follow the talk. \nThis event is open to current and new subscribing Members of Bluecoat Display Centre and The Athenaeum. \nBooking: Call Bluecoat Display Centre on 0151 709 4014 or email crafts@bluecoatdisplaycentre.com. \nPlease note this event is open to adults and children over the age of 14.

SUMMARY:Film Group Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 12th April\, 2017 – “Good Night and Good Luck”: Made in 2005\, this is about Edward J Murrow’s confrontation with Joe McCarthy and the part CBS News played in his downfall. Murrow (a hero in Britain because of his broadcasts during the London blitz) is played by David Stathairn and together with his producer\, Fred Friendly\, (George Clooney) they set out to show the American people the unacceptability of McCarthyism. Written and directed by George Clooney (whose own father was an early TV newsman)\, the film shows the pressure that Murrow and his team were under from McCarthy’s lies and bullying. Destroying others by lies\, McCarthy is destroyed by the truth. The cast includes Robert Downey Jr\, Frank Langella and Geoff Daniels. An excellent portrayal of a very uncomfortable period in America’s recent history\, it won Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars.
