DESCRIPTION:Athenaeum Literature Group \n4th March 2025 at 2.00.pm in the Library Reading Room \nThis month we are delighted to welcome local poet and playwright Stephen Regan\, who will be reading some of his work and talking about writing poetry. \nStephen Regan’s poems have been published in various literary journals\, including … Envoi; Reach Poetry; Killing the Angel; Dove Tales; and Dreich. His work has also appeared in: Best of Manchester Poets Volume 2 anthology; and The Quality of Mersey anthology. He started his poetry career on the live spoken word circuit in London in the 1990s. Stephen was later active on the Merseyside live scene\, and he founded The Liver Bards – a popular group that is still going. \n  \nHis play ‘Tim: an ordinary boy’ (about the bombing of Warrington in 1993) was staged as part of the Wirral Festival of Firsts in 2014. \n  \nFor 13 years\, Stephen also wrote as SAM BRADY – the very popular TV critic of ITV ORACLE and ITV TELETEXT in the UK. Sam’s biggest fan was TV presenter Lorraine Kelly! \n  \nStephen – a professional journalist and communications director – also wrote the daily satirical fiction serial Partners for Today national newspaper. \n  \nAnother unmissable Lit Group event. And don’t forget that food and drink will be available in the Newsroom before and after the meeting. \n

DESCRIPTION:It’s A Small World\nTalk & Dinner with Professor Rasmita Raval\nThursday 13th March 2025\, 6:30pm for 7:00pm\n£45.00 per ticket\, inclusive of reception drink and three-course dinner. \nHumans perceive and explain the world by what we can see. The beauty and the vastness of the Universe has been captured for centuries by astronomical telescopes. However\, there are worlds so small that they remained unseen and undiscovered until recently. Now\, remarkable technology has allowed us to explore these mysterious worlds at a scale we could not have previously imagined. \nThis talk will take us on an illustrated journey into this small world. We will see the smallest patterns in nature\, which have counterparts in Islamic and Western artwork. Equally fascinating is the discovery that these small worlds can exist in mirror forms and this small difference lies at the centre of an unsolved mystery on how life evolved on earth. We will also discover how humble bacteria come together to create communities that have a Jeckyll and Hyde existence\, delivering good health via the gut microbiome\, or causing chronic infections that are testing the last line of antibiotic defences \nProfessor Rasmita Raval is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Liverpool. She is also Director of the Surface Science Centre and Co-Director of The National Biofilm Centre. Rasmita is a regular visitor to the Athenaeum and will be known to many. Join your fellow Proprietors on any or all of the organised sessions on a Saturday afternoon. Members Helen & Stephen Lyus will be available to help Proprietors investigate their share’s previous holders\, giving advice on how to search various refer-ence sources held in the Athenaeum and offering support and encouragement in a social setting. The aim is to enable Proprietors to write a short paragraph on each holder of their share to contribute to a database of Athenaeum share holders. \nSessions are schedule for 2:30pm in the Reading Room
