SUMMARY:Literature Group: Gone With the Wind
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 7th February 2023 – Library Reading Room \nDiana Lane will be discussing Gone with the Wind\, a novel by Margaret Mitchell\, was published in 1936 and subsequently made into a film in 1939. The book has been an American bestseller ever since and in 2014 a Harris poll found it to be the second favourite book of American readers\, just behind the Bible. It has been absorbed into American popular culture\, referred to and interpreted by scholars at American universities. The film has been considered to be one of the greatest movies ever made. \nSet in Georgia during and after the Civil War\, this work of historical fiction tells the story of Scarlett O’Hara\, the daughter of a well-to-do plantation owner\, who uses every means at her disposal to claw her way out of poverty following Sherman’s destructive “March to the Sea”. Its themes resonate in American politics to this day. \nAttendance is free of charge.
