Edward Rushton: Poetry and Politics in Romantic-Era Liverpool
To commemorate the bicentenary of the death of Edward Rushton (1756-1814), Liverpool’s most radical poet and abolitionist, Liverpool University Press (http://www.liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/) has published two books which are being launched at the Liverpool Athenaeum on 5 May 2015 at 5.15: The Collected Writings of Edward Rushton, edited by Paul Baines, and Franca Dellarosa, Talking Revolution: Edward Rushton’s Rebellious Poetics, 1782-1814. There will be a round table discussion involving the authors Franca Dellarosa and Paul Baines and local historian Alexandra Robinson, readings from the poetry by the writer and performer John Davies (co-writer of Unsung, a new play about Rushton), and some examples of Rushton’s popular songs. Refreshments will be provided. Copies of the books will be available for sale. The event is free but for catering purposes it would be helpful if those intending to come would contact Alexandra Robinson (lexy@liverpool.ac.uk) or Paul Baines (bainespt@liverpool.ac.uk).
