At the heart of the Athenaeum is its famous library. The reading room has been called “ one of the handsomest rooms in Europe”. It is frequently used as a TV and film location. The Library has some 60000 items in stock in the reading room, on two floors, one of which is glass. A further three bookcases stand in the Newsroom and Committee Room housing rare books and the Roscoe collection.

On the fourth floor is the members dining room open for lunch everyday. The Athenaeum is very proud of the standards of cuisine in the Dining Room and together with a quiet and intimate atmosphere the dining room is the city’s premier location for lunch with friends and an excellent location for a business lunch.

The social calendar at the Athenaeum is busy one with number of interest groups meeting to enjoy their particular subject. At present there are groups covering Architecture, Literature, History, Music, Library and Archive meeting usually monthly with some meetings during the afternoon and increasingly in the early evening when supper is usually included in the proceedings. The main social programme is the Presidential programme which encompasses musical evenings with musical theatre performances and our Annual Opera Prize where students of the Royal Northern College of Music compete for this special prize. Also included are dinners with outstanding speakers and some black tie events for Burns Night and the Annual Dinner.

We have an annual quiz night where the Athenaeum challenges other local organisations to an evening of not too serious questions and answers.
