An Introduction to Environmental History with Dr D. Chester

2:30pm in the Reading Room, 27th February 2024

“Although having some precursors in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, environmental history essentially grew out of the conservation movement of the 1960s. It seeks to examine the historic impact of people on the planet and uses not only conventional archival source materials but also information from archaeology and from so-called sedimentary archives, with information being extracted using techniques that include pollen analysis, chemical markers, magnetic signatures and radiometric dating techniques.

In this lecture, the scope of environmental history will be illustrated using three examples: the use and abuse of the Earth during the Holocene (i.e. the last 10,000 years), human impact on the landscape of southern Europe and the environmental disaster which is represented by the history of Easter Island.”
