JUDGE JEFFREYS’ JAUNT
Everyone knows that in 1685, following the failed Monmouth Rebellion, Judge Jeffries, at the so-called Bloody Assizes, sentenced a number of persons connected with it in the most savage manner. Cruelty is the picture that people have of him. But there was a great deal more to him – hard drinking, for a start. Dick Hamilton describes his visit to the Northern Circuit in 1684 – York, Newcastle and Carlisle – when he was welcomed with a 16-gun salute. It shows a fuller picture of his character.
All welcome.
