Tuesday 20th November, 2018: Libel (1959) This British Film was directed by Anthony Asquith and stars Olivia de Havilland, Dirk Bogarde, Paul Massie, Wilfred Hyde-White and Robert Morley. A Canadian World War II pilot (Massie) in London sees Sir Mark Lodden (Bogarde) on TV giving a tour of his ancestral home. The pilot recalls that he was in a POW camp with a Major Lodden and believes that the baronet is actually an actor called Wellney (also played by Bogarde), who shared their POW hut. De Havilland plays the baronet’s wife and the pilot’s belief results in a libel trial.
The film is recognised by the American Film Institute as one of its top 10 court films.
