In January 2024 we received a welcome reply from the capital of Bulgaria. That the Residence Club in Sofia had accepted our offer of reciprocity.
The building is one of the masterpieces of Sofia’s architecture, built in the first decade of the 20th century for a former Mayor of Sofia, this exquisite architectural creation bears the signature of the Austro-Hungarian architect Friedrich Grünanger. The lavish decoration is the work of the royal decorator of the Bulgarian royal family, Andreas Greis.
Designed in a Neo-Baroque style, with some Renaissance elements, the house boasts Rococo-style interior ornaments. The building was officially declared a cultural monument in 1955.
After extensive and careful restoration, the house returned to its original splendour, and in 2011 its doors opened again – welcoming members and guests of the only premium private club in Bulgaria.
Located within the city centre, the Residence club offers an exclusive lounge offering a selection of vintage wines, well-aged whiskeys with the option of enjoying a selection of quality cigars.
The Residence is an impeccable venue for lunch and dinner, formal, business and personal meetings. The atmosphere is elegant and discreet. Connoisseurs of fine cuisine, selected drinks and personal service will enjoy every visit. A winter garden and a room for private dinners are available.
Ryan Air offer flights from Liverpool John Lennon direct to Sofia. Prices vary on how far in advance you can book. But I priced two adults traveling return for late April (approximately 2 months in advance) for £220.
With a history spanning Roman and Ottoman rule, Sofia has plenty to offer the visiting tourist enjoying a city break. And with an exclusive club at your disposal, this summer could be a perfect time to take advantage of the benefits of Athenaeum reciprocity.
