Member Monday #007

Every Monday we profile one of our Members. This week in we are joined by Proprietor 475, Director of the Thursford Collection, Susan Rutherford.

Who are you?

I am a person who has always aspired to make a positive difference in the world and to recognise, promote and support people in their professional aspirations and endeavours.

I also love Liverpool which has given me endless opportunity, love and friendship.

Although as a Consultant I work in many places and sectors I love to return regularly to the Athenaeum.

What is your greatest achievement?

A wonderful, challenging career working with gifted people and helping to support the growth of Liverpool, the wider region and beyond.

Can you give one interesting fact about yourself?

I am a Director of the Thursford Collection and am involved with the biggest Christmas Spectacular in Europe.

Who brought you to The Athenaeum?

Roger Phillips who I met when I was the Chair of the great Reader Organisation which has done so much to support so many people through the benefits of reading aloud. Roger is an inspiration and has been a most generous mentor.

Is there anything you would change about the Athenaeum?

The Athenaeum has continually changed and has over the years provided a place to discuss and create opportunities. As a past HR Director at the University of Liverpool and a Non Executive Director at The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospital’s NHS Trust and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital I am conscious that these great Institutions were in part brought to life around the newsroom tables of the Athenaeum. So today and into the future we must continue to be an influential force for good in the City and wider region.

Do you have any Athenaeum memories or stories that you wish to share?

I remember with great fondness the Presidential event when the late Past President Sir David Maddison invited a group of proprietors to London to stay at the East India Club, visit the Houses of Parliament, eat at the wonderful restaurant La Duca, attended the Carol Concert at The Temple Church with a memorable reception and lunch at The Inner Temple. It was a wonderful weekend of fellowship. The generosity of Sir David knew no bounds and it was a real privilege to be part of such an experience.

What would you say to anyone considering joining the Club?

If you join the Athenaeum you will enjoy the benefit of being part of the history of Liverpool, you will join a fantastic network of people who will support you and where you will find fellowship all with the same desire to celebrate and promote Liverpool as a City and region. You will also have access to fantastic resources such as space, library, catering facilities and access to Reciprocal Clubs with staff who will do whatever they can to support your needs whether personal or professional.
