Member Monday #008

Every Monday we profile one of our Members. This week in we are joined by Proprietor 12, the current President of The Athenaeum, Dr Gaynor Bresnen.

Who are you?

A pharmacist and retired lecturer in pharmacy. A person with many diverse interests both practical and sporting. Willing to have a go at anything and take on a challenge. A jack of all trades!

What is your greatest achievement?

I would like to think that it is managing to combine a career with successfully bringing up three children although I’m not so sure that they would agree.

Can you give one interesting fact about yourself?

I am a BSAC Dive Leader. One of the best activities I’ve have ever undertaken. Most of my diving has been in the cold murky waters around the British Isles, but a few years ago I managed to do some diving whilst staying on Ascension Island and on one occasion as I watched a small octopus change colour as it swam in front of me I thought how lucky I was to be able to observe the world from a completely different perspective.

What brought you to The Athenaeum?

Ian Cubbin and I worked together at the University for more years than either of us like to remember and in our relatively early days of working together he allowed me to join him in escaping from the stresses and strains of LJMU to the tranquility of the Athenaeum. The rest is history.

Is there anything you would change about the Athenaeum?

I would love to see more people of all ages and backgrounds being able to enjoy everything the Athenaeum has to offer.

Do you have any Athenaeum memories or stories that you wish to share?

As President this year I have been able to build up a huge bank of memories, usually of the people I have had the pleasure of meeting and two of my memories of people who always made me feel welcome – Michael Shankland and David Maddison. Two people who represent all that is good about the Athenaeum.

What would you say to anyone considering joining the Club?

It gives you an opportunity to meet a huge range of people who will challenge and entertain in equal measure. It is a place where you can have a quiet few hours or broaden your horizons by attending the talks, musical evenings, dining experiences or interest groups.
