Light Night 2014 – Friday 16th May

Light Night 2014 is on Friday 16th May and this year it gives a rare opportunity for the public to see the magnificent library of the Athenaeum, which has been described as the finest room in northern England.  The library contains over 60,000 volumes, many of which are very old and very rare.  On Light night some of these will be brought out of storage and be on display for visitors.  Ranging in date from the fourteenth to the twenty first century this is an opportunity to see medieval manuscripts, rare early printed books, the first edition of Bradshaw’s railway guide, Florence Nightingale’s autograph and many others…

The library will be open to visitors between 7pm and 9.30pm with pre-booked guided tours every half hour; 7:00pm, 7.30pm, 8.00pm, 8.30pm & 9.00pm. Tours cost £5 per person.

To buy your ticket for a tour call at reception at the Athenaeum , Church Alley (opposite Marks and Spencer) between 10am and 4pm Monday to Friday, alternatively you can contact on 0151 709 7770, or by email on reception@theathenaeum.org.uk.  This tour is not suitable for children under 10 year of age.  Pre-booking is essential.  Tickets will be on sale from14 April 2014.  Light refreshments will be on sale throughout the evening.LIBRARY1
